Using your water saving tools
Water is our most precious natural resource. Not only do we need water to drink
and go about our daily lives, be it washing our clothes or watering the garden, water is
also used to make many different items, such as paper and cardboard. Farmers also rely
on water to grow and harvest their crops.
It’s sometimes easy to forget exactly where water comes from and how important it is that
we remember not to waste it. If we don’t get enough rain, then it means our dams have
less water and our farmers can’t grow their crops.
Climate change and drought mean that we all have to be smarter in the way we use water.
Finding ways to use less water is a good way to start. You can do this around the home
by taking shorter showers, not leaving the tap running when brushing your teeth and
cleaning the car with a damp cloth. These are all practical ways that you can save
water.
You can also speak to your classmates and teachers about how you can save water at school.
Many schools now have water tanks that collect rain which can then be used for things
such as flushing toilets or watering the school vegetable garden.
Finding ways to save water can be both fun and educational, most importantly you will be
doing your bit to help fight climate change.
How to Play
The key to being a good water detective is to keep your eyes open around the
house. Discover places where water can be saved and reused, fix leaking pipes and control the
use of washing machines and dishwashers.
